1947年に山口県にて生まれる。1958年10歳のとき、日系アメリカ人の両親と共に米国へ渡る。仏教徒は、カリフォルニア州のマウンテンビュー市で公立学校に通っているときに仏教寺院にて出会った。 1970年にスタンフォード大学を卒業（専攻は文化人類学）後、1年間をかけて世界中を旅する。その際にタイの修道院にて数か月間、僧侶として生活をする。帰国後、カリフォルニア州バークレー市にあるGTU (Graduate Theological Union)のメンバーでもある仏教大学院(Institute of Buddhist Studies/IBS）の修士課程に入学し、仏教研究を開始する。後に東京大学大学院において修士号（インド哲学）を取得し、浄土真宗僧侶として得度。日本から帰国した後、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校において博士号（仏教研究）を取得した。 |

学位取得後は1984年から仏教大学院にて、主に准教授および学部長補佐として研究・教育に従事しつつ、1995年には、カリフォルニア州ユニオンシティにある南アラメダ郡仏教教会の常設教誨師となる。1998年に東京に移り住み、武蔵野大学の仏教学教授となる。代表的な授業は「縁（相互依存性）の原理」。並行して、東京大学や龍谷大学でも教鞭をとった。 |

現在、仏教伝道協会が支援する中国仏教経典英訳プロジェクトの編集長を務めつつ、本願寺総合研究所において非常勤研究員として活動する。国際真宗学会の前会長であり、日本仏教心理学会でも前会長を務めた。 数多くの著作があり、代表的なものは： The Dawn of Chinese Pure Land Buddhist Doctrine (The State Univ. of New York, 1990), Ocean: An Introduction to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in America (Wisdom Ocean Publication, 1997), アメリカ仏教 (武蔵野大学出版, 2010), Buddhism on Air: Kaleidoscope of a Growing Relgion (Buddhist Education Center, 2015), 智慧の潮：親鸞の智慧・主体性・社会性 (武蔵野大学出版, 2017)。著作はこれまで日本語・中国語・ポルトガル語に翻訳されている。 2017年には、インド学および仏教学において卓越した業績を収めた研究者に対して授与される中村元東方学術賞（第27回）を受賞。2018年4月8日にNHK教育テレビで放送された1時間ドキュメンタリー番組「こころの時代」ではその人となりが取材されている。 Reference: “Kenneth Tanaka” by Wikipedia |
